Unlock Role Clarity with Video-Based Learning

In today’s fast-paced work environment, organizations face the constant challenge of training employees in new and evolving roles. Whether an employee is new to a position or needs to improve their performance, traditional training methods often fall short. Video-based learning offers a powerful solution, particularly for roles that require visual and behavioral skill sets.

The Training Challenge

Let’s take the example of the retail business of a telecom company. Consider three scenarios of a relationship manager role: a newly appointed senior relationship manager who lacks experience, an existing senior relationship manager who is underperforming, and a top-performing senior relationship manager. Organizations need a way to effectively communicate best practices to the first two categories of employees.

Consider the role of a Store Manager. New hires or underperforming employees in such roles often lack clarity about expectations and best practices. Traditional on-the-job training methods can be time-consuming and prone to errors, making it difficult to achieve immediate productivity.

Traditionally, employees learn on the job, gradually acquiring skills through trial and error. However, this approach can be time-consuming and lead to costly mistakes. These employees are often not the best “readers” and “conceptual learners”.

Video to the Rescue

An innovative solution is to create videos that demonstrate how specific roles should be performed. These videos can showcase the nuances of the role, highlighting crucial visual and behavioral skills. Think of it as “show, don’t just tell.”

To address these challenges, Vi can leverage role-play videos tailored to specific job roles. These videos showcase real-life scenarios, demonstrating the nuances of customer interactions, team management, and operational excellence. For instance:

  • A video could depict a Store Manager resolving customer complaints effectively.
  • Another could demonstrate how to motivate team members to meet sales targets.

Such videos help employees clearly understand role expectations, enabling them to visualize and replicate best practices.

Benefits of Video-Based Learning

  1. Accelerated Learning Curve: Videos reduce the time required for employees to transition into new roles by offering concise, engaging content.
  2. Enhanced Retention: Visual and auditory elements in videos improve information retention compared to text-based materials.
  3. Cost Efficiency: Once created, videos can be reused across multiple training sessions, reducing costs associated with instructor-led training.
  4. On-Demand Accessibility: Employees can access training videos anytime, allowing them to learn at their own pace.

The Opportunity Cost of Ineffective Training

The cost of ineffective training can be significant. It can take months for an employee to fully transition into a new role, during which time their productivity is compromised. Video-based learning can significantly reduce this transition time by providing a concise and engaging overview of the role.

Did You Know: According to a study by the Training Industry, companies that use video in their training programs see an average improvement of 23% in employee performance.

Conclusion

Video-based learning offers a cost-effective and impactful way to train employees in new roles. By visually demonstrating best practices, videos can accelerate learning, improve performance, and ultimately enhance organizational effectiveness. It’s about making training more accessible, engaging, and impactful. Companies can imagine and reimagine crucial roles which have high volumes and create different video series on role clarity.

Inside Knowlens

Introduction

Financial literacy is a crucial life skill, yet it is often overlooked in formal education. Bajaj Finserv, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, commissioned the development of a structured financial literacy learning program for undergraduate students. The objective was to equip young learners with essential financial skills that would not only secure their financial future but also instil a sense of responsibility—an attribute critical for success in their professional careers. Additionally, these concepts played a key role in enhancing their employability by fostering financial awareness and decision-making abilities.

Challenge

The primary challenge was to make financial literacy engaging and relatable for students. Traditional learning methods often fail to sustain interest, especially when dealing with complex financial concepts. The need was to present these concepts in a compelling format that would resonate with young learners, keeping them engaged while ensuring practical understanding and application.

Solution

Knowlens designed a film-based learning module, titled ‘The Interns’ , structured into seven episodes, each woven into an engaging narrative. The storyline followed the journey of two young women, Sakshi and Meera, whose fathers were a school teacher and a café & bakery owner, respectively. As they joined a company for an internship, they were introduced to financial literacy concepts by their senior colleague at  workplace.

The film explored their ambitions, struggles, and family challenges, making financial literacy a personal and relatable experience. Over the course of seven episodes, the girls learned and applied key financial concepts to shape their career paths—whether in higher education, corporate careers, or entrepreneurship.

Each episode was followed by a structured debrief, where core financial concepts were explained, including:

  • Basics of Income and Expenses
  • Basic & Advanced Investment Instruments
  • Debt Management
  • Business Financing
  • Credit Rating
  • Working Capital Management

This approach ensured that students not only learned theoretical concepts but also saw their practical applications in real-life scenarios.

Impact

The project successfully delivered financial literacy in an engaging, story-driven format, making complex topics accessible to undergraduate students. By leveraging Knowlens’ expertise in film-based learning, the program provided a practical, easy-to-absorb, and impact-driven educational experience.

This initiative serves as a model for how corporates can drive meaningful CSR programs that empower young individuals with essential life skills, ultimately enhancing their financial well-being and professional preparedness.
